If you must not have heard about James Heriott, then you are not serious about English Literature and one of the most prolific authors in recent times. James Heriott has also published other books in the same volume of four books such as All Creatures Great and Small (1972), All Things Bright and Beautiful (1974) and The Lord God Made them All (1981). Though he was quite past his prime when he started writing his books, his writing style has found many admirers and continue to evoke the same emotive response even today.

The book 'All Things Wise and Wonderful' is the third book in the series and was first published in 1976. The story is set in the YorkShire Dales in Northern England, and the time period of the story is the 1930's to the 1940's. As a veterinarian, James Heriott has amassed a high level of wit and wisdom during his professional years, which is amply demonstrated in his writings.

During World War II, James is training with the RAF, and goes to meet his wife Helen whenever possible. In this book, Heriott writes in a very civic manner avoiding the conflicts of that era. Moreover, in his Yorkshire style of English, he writes to make one feel a part of the story and very much connected to his life. This story is heartfelt, sensitive and at the same time humorous, making you feel the need to get hold of the other books in the series as well.

This is the second book from the renowned series by James Herriot; I have had the privilege to lay my hands on. The book was as interesting as the previous and I have decided to read the other books in the series as well. It is interesting to get into the lives of people living by the countryside. They are poignant with an unbeatable civic sense and a long list of virtues.

Each of the chapters is so well written that it will leave the reader laughing or getting emotionally attached with the characters. A critic once said that you either laugh or shed a quiet tear whilst reading a James Herriot book.

People from the country side are not without foibles, yet the admirable qualities are laudable to an extent that they exude a sense of inspiration. There is a lesson or two, one may learn from their simplistic approach towards life. They maintained dignity of labor with utmost ease and respected one another. The book takes you very close to the characters so much so that you can actually feel them in flesh and blood. This is surely a book you must read if you wish to be taken back to the country side of life and experience a sense of unique simplicity.

I recommend the book to readers that could do with a laugh and are sensitive enough to like the simple lives laced with humility, virtue and a sense of inexplicable freedom.
