Over the post twenty years, judges such as Robert Penn Warren, Raymond Carver, Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Atwood, Russell Banks, Tabias Wolff, Alice McDermott, Frank Conroy, and Bharati Mukherjee have selected the best collections from the hundreds submitted annually for the Drue Heinz Literature Prize, one of the most prestigious awards of its kind. Winning has helped launch the careers of a score of previously undiscovered authors, many of whom have enjoyed great commercial success as well as critical acclaim, including Stewart O'Nan, Edith Pearlman, David Basworth, Lucy Honig, W. D. Wetherell, Jane McCafferty, Rick DeMarinis, and Adria Bernardi.

John Edgar Wideman has contributed to 20: The Best of the Drue Heinz Literature Prize as an editor. John Edgar Wideman won the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1984 for Sent for You Yesterday and in 1990 for Philadelphia Fire. His second memoir, Fatheralong, was a finalist for the National Book Award. His most recent books are Hoop Roots and The Island: Martinique. He teaches at Brown University.
